Re: Sorrow and Solidarity
I am writing to invite all of you to the Fine Arts Plaza at 5:30 p.m. today (Thursday) to join together in an expression of sorrow and solidarity. Over the past few days, there have been many events supported by many organizations that offered opportunities to mourn the nation's terrible loss of human life and to talk together about the great tragedy we have experienced.
Today, we will gather as an entire campus community to express our sorrow for the families and loved ones of those who died in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. We will proclaim our unity as a campus and our commitment to the safety and well-being of all our students, staff, and faculty.
It is understandable that many people are feeling anger and anxiety about the violence inflicted upon innocent victims Tuesday. But it is not acceptable to engage in abusive behavior against innocent people on our campus. Just as we want to find ways to reach out to those who have suffered as a result of Tuesday's attacks, so do we need to reach out to those on our own campus who have experienced verbal and physical harassment.
Please come join us as we meet as a campus community to share our sorrow and affirm our solidarity.
