IU OFFERS COLLEGE-BOUND STUDENTS A HEAD START
THROUGH SUMMER WORKSHOP
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- College-bound students can get a head start on their freshman year by attending a one-day Saturday workshop at Indiana University's Bloomington campus this summer.
Sponsored by the IU Student Academic Center, the workshop is scheduled July 31 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the School of Education. Sessions will be led by experienced instructors from the center and are designed for high school sophomores through recent high school graduates.
Called "Strategies for Learning in College," the workshop is designed specifically to introduce high schoolers to a university environment, while teaching them effective study skills for achieving academic success in high school as well as college. The skills include strategies for managing time, taking notes from texts and lectures, reading college-level textbooks with understanding, and taking multiple-choice and essay exams.
Transition from high school to college is often difficult for both students and parents, according to educational experts. Special sessions will be available at no extra cost to parents of workshop participants, covering such topics as what parents need to know about the college selection process and how to help their student get the best out of college.
Both parents and students will be able to attend a session on exploring major and career issues and how such decisions contribute to college success.
Opportunities to tour the IU Bloomington campus, learn how to use a large university library to enhance one's learning, or learn how to use the World Wide Web as a career and education information source will be available in the late afternoon to all participants.
The $65 registration fee includes all instruction. Participants will be responsible for the cost of their own lunch, but supervision, if needed, will be provided. A registration form or more information can be obtained by writing to the Student Academic Center, 316 N. Jordan, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405, or calling 812-855-7313, or going to the center's Web page at http://www.indiana.edu/~sac/summerworkshop.html
