July 26 event to celebrate 10th anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act
July 11, 2000
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- July 26 will mark a decade since President George Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act. Since then, the ADA has played an indispensable part in the lives of people with disabilities across Indiana and the United States.
To mark this milestone, a celebration is planned for July 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Indianapolis Artsgarden in downtown Indianapolis. The event, "Indiana's 10th Anniversary ADA Celebration: Renew the Pledge," is sponsored by the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community at Indiana University, ADA-Indiana and the Indiana Governor's Planning Council for People with Disabilities.
The celebration will include a special program from noon to 1 p.m. featuring Indiana first lady Judy O'Bannon, who will present an official state proclamation in support of the ADA. Other features of the day-long celebration include performances by artists with disabilities and speeches by local and statewide leaders. Businesses and individuals will sign a pledge to renew their support of the ADA.
Organizations will have booths and provide relevant information. Music and refreshments will be provided.
The public is encouraged to get involved in this free event. People with disabilities, their friends and family members, social service and government agency personnel, and other interested community members are particularly invited to attend. Many churches in the Indianapolis area, particularly those downtown, will join in the celebration by ringing their bells at noon.
