IU announces search committee for athletics director to succeed Doninger
Nov. 16, 2000
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University President Myles Brand announced today (Nov. 16) the formation of a search committee to find a replacement for retiring Athletics Director Clarence H. Doninger, who will step down from his post June 30. Brand has asked Vice President of Administration J. Terry Clapacs to chair the committee.
"We are seeking someone who understands the academic mission of Indiana University and the role of the Athletics Department within that mission, and someone who is committed to the academic success of student-athletes," Brand said. "This is an absolutely essential position for Indiana University, and one that we must fill with great care."
Clapacs said the committee, which will begin its work immediately, will seek a person who is well suited to lead a major athletics program within the context of an academic institution committed to excellence and integrity.
"We want an individual with strong people skills, financial, organizational and marketing abilities, and a solid background related to athletics," Clapacs said. "The search committee will be aggressive in identifying potential candidates. We will attempt to attract successful athletics directors from other programs or other universities as well as look for candidates in the private sector who have had success in operating or managing operations that are similar to athletics departments."
Brand said he would like the committee to complete its work in order to have the new athletics director in place by June 30, the mandatory date for Doninger's retirement.
Under Doninger's leadership, IU has won two national championships and 25 Big Ten regular season or tournament titles, and has participated in 52 NCAA team championships. He also is credited with aggressively leading the Athletics Department toward gender equity compliance under Title IX and spearheading the addition of a number of state-of-the-art facilities such as the Mellencamp Pavilion and the renovation of the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex. Doninger is a member of the NCAA Division I Management Council and chair of the Big Ten Administrators Council.
"Clarence Doninger's leadership in IU athletics has been excellent over the last 10 years, both in our success on the playing fields and in the classroom with our student-athletes," Brand said in announcing the formation of the 18-member search committee. "Our goal now is to conduct a very aggressive and comprehensive national search to continue to build on the tremendous traditions of IU athletics."
A native of Evansville, Ind., Doninger received a bachelor's degree in business from IU in 1957, and in 1960 he earned a law degree with distinction from IU. He was a member of basketball coach Branch McCracken's 1957 Big Ten co-championship team and a rider on Sigma Nu's winning team in the 1957 Little 500 bicycle race.
