IU Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention hosting national conference in Indianapolis

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Success in preventing AIDS in rural communities is the theme for a nationwide conference Friday through Sunday (April 20-22) at the University Place Conference Center and Hotel in Indianapolis.
"HIV/STD Prevention in Rural Communities: Sharing Successful Strategies II" is the title of the event, sponsored by the Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention and the Levi Strauss Foundation. The center is headquartered at Indiana University in Bloomington and is a joint project of IU, Purdue University and Texas A&M University.
The conference will begin with an opening reception Friday evening and include working sessions all day Saturday and Sunday until noon.
Conference director William Yarber, senior director of the Rural Center and an IU professor of applied health science, said approximately 125 health educators, AIDS prevention officials and government officials are expected for the conference.
Topics to be discussed include AIDS prevention among migrant farm workers, how rural churches can help in AIDS prevention, AIDS prevention in Appalachia, and AIDS in rural homeless shelters.
Speakers will represent HIV/STD prevention programs in several states, including Indiana, Michigan, New York, Alabama, Maryland, Massachusetts, Ohio, Arizona, Kentucky, Washington, North Carolina, Vermont, Georgia, Texas, Idaho, West Virginia, California and Iowa.
