ANDREWS NAMED ACTING IU DEAN OF FACULTIES
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Moya Andrews, professor of speech and hearing sciences at Indiana University, has been named acting vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of the faculties for the IU Bloomington campus.
Andrews had been serving as associate dean of the faculties. She will replace Deborah Freund, who is leaving IU to become the provost at Syracuse University.
"Moya has been a knowledgeable and trusted colleague to many faculty since she came here in 1971, and I appreciate having her steady hand at the helm of academic affairs during this transition," said Kenneth R.R. Gros Louis, vice president for academic affairs and chancellor of the IU Bloomington campus. "She works well with people of different views and always brings out the best in others."
Andrews first joined the office in 1995. Her portfolio has included promotion and tenure, faculty development and the scholarship of teaching. This spring, she received the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Office of Women's Affairs.
An IU faculty member since 1971, Andrews has a bachelor of arts degree from Queensland University in Australia, a master of arts degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a doctorate from Columbia University.
"The role of this office is to support our faculty as new models of teaching and learning are tested and applied," Andrews said. "However, we must ensure that as new issues in higher education are debated and addressed, we never sacrifice the academic values and high standards to which we are committed."
She added that she expects to be an advocate for the faculty as well as a facilitator in the effort to demonstrate how scholarship and learning inform and enhance individual lives.
A search for a permanent dean is expected to begin late this summer.
