IU Trustees appoint Moya Andrews as vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of the faculties

March 31, 2000

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Trustees of Indiana University meeting today (March 31) at IU South Bend appointed Moya L. Andrews as the permanent vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of the faculties for the Bloomington campus.

"Moya was recommended by her colleagues both for her superb work as acting dean this last year and for her almost 30 years of involvement and service as a member of the IU faculty," said Kenneth R.R. Gros Louis, IU vice president for academic affairs and chancellor of the Bloomington campus. "She is known for her diplomatic determination, a blend of skills that makes her such an effective administrator."

Andrews joined the Bloomington speech and hearing sciences faculty as an assistant professor in 1972 and became a full professor in 1986. She served as associate dean of the faculties from 1995 until she became acting vice chancellor in July 1999.

Asked about her goals for the office, Andrews said her vision is that it be at the center of the Bloomington academic community. "It must be in the hands of the faculty, not the administration," she said. "The dean of the faculties, by definition, represents and implements the will of the faculty."

She pledged to help faculty communicate academic values and a framework to support both the vision of the office and the way that vision is translated into best practices. She wants to have more faculty consultation in future initiatives of the office and to strengthen the way institutional research informs decisions about programming.

Gros Louis noted the central role the office plays in promotion and tenure, calling it the shaping of the faculty for years to come. "I have confidence in Moya's ability to maintain fair and consistent high standards," he said.

The office also oversees Continuing Education, Instructional Services Support, Faculty Records, Institutional Research, University Division and Summer Sessions.

Andrews earned her bachelor's degree at Queensland University in Australia, her master's degree at the University of California-Santa Barbara and her doctorate at Columbia University. She served as director of the IU Voice Clinic for 20 years and received the Distinguished Scholar Award last year from the IU Office of Women's Affairs.
