IU to present its highest staff honor
Feb. 2, 2000
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University president Myles Brand will present the E. Ross Bartley Award, the university's highest staff honor, to two recipients this month. Donald Weaver will receive the award on Feb. 4 and John D. Mulholland on Feb. 16. Both ceremonies will be held at the DeVault Alumni Center from 4 to 5 p.m.
Weaver, who currently serves as director of the IU Office of State Relations, has made a variety of contributions to the IU community that range from his work to advance the university's interest in state government to his many years of service as a timekeeper for the Little 500 bicycle race. His professional stature was recently recognized by his appointment to the Midwest Commission for Higher Education. In addition, Weaver has actively participated in the Bloomington community through his leadership and service in the Faith Lutheran Church and on the boards of the Boys and Girls Club, the IU Credit Union, Bloomington Little League and the North-South All Star football game.
Mulholland, who came to IU in 1972 to serve as treasurer, guided the university's finances through some difficult years. He also lent his time and talents to fund-raising efforts for the Department of Theatre and Drama and served as president of the Theatre Circle. His professional accomplishments include service as president of the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), and recently he received NACUBO's most prestigious honor, the Distinguished Business Officer Award. As a member of the Bloomington community, Mulholland has served on the board of Big Brothers-Big Sisters and has provided stewardship to the Community Foundation, serving as the organization's first executive director. In addition, he has volunteered countless hours and financial expertise to the local Habitat for Humanity group.
"Staff members such as Don and Jack have a vision of what Indiana University should be and how we can achieve those lofty goals," said Brand. "We have all shared in the fruits of their achievements, and these individuals deserve to be recognized and honored."
Upon creating the E. Ross Bartley Award in 1984, IU Chancellor Herman B Wells described Bartley as "the best in the tradition of dedicated, knowledgeable and loyal administrators who give unstintingly of themselves in support of the institution." The award is given annually to a member of the administrative or support staff who embodies Bartley's characteristics of outstanding leadership, service and professional accomplishment at local, state or national levels.
