FINE ARTS QUARTET AND WORLD-CLASS MUSICIANS
HEADLINING BRAHMS CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL JULY 3-31
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In commemoration of the centenary of Johannes Brahms' death the Indiana University School of Music is presenting an all-Brahms Chamber Music Festival beginning July 3 (Thursday) and ending July 31. All concerts will begin at 8 p.m. in acoustically perfect Auer Hall on the Bloomington campus.
The Borodin Trio, comprised of violinist Rostislav Dubinsky, cellist Laszlo Varga and pianist Luba Edlina, will inaugurate the festival Thursday evening with Brahms' Quartet No. 3 in C Minor for piano and strings, Op. 60; Trio in E-Flat Major, for horn, violin and piano, Op. 40; and Trio No. 1 in B Major for piano, violin and cello, Op. 8. Michael Hatfield, horn, and Jerry Horner, viola, will be featured performers
The Borodin Duo, featuring Dubinsky and Edlina, will perform again on July 20.
The Fine Arts Quartet, one of the most distinguished ensembles in chamber music today, and a frequent attraction at IU's summer music festivals, will take the stage July 7, 9, 11, 14 and 21 for a broad series of the composer's chamber music works, including piano quartets and sonatas for cello, clarinet, viola and violin.
Comprised of violinists Ralph Evans and Efim Boico, violist Jerry Horner and cellist Wolfgang Laufer, the Fine Arts Quartet has a brilliant history of performing success and an extensive recording catalog. The quartet will be joined for various pieces throughout the festival by renowned IU School of Music faculty members including pianists Menahem Pressler, Edward Auer, Andrew DeGrado and Edmund Battersby; violists Paul Biss and Alan de Veritch; and clarinetists James Campbell and Howard Klug.
Additionally, this summer's special guests will be cellist Colin Carr and pianist Jeannette
Koekkoek. Carr, a faculty member at the New England Conservatory since 1983, is an
internationally-acclaimed soloist and chamber musician who has toured and recorded extensively in the past dozen years. Carr will perform with the Fine Arts Quartet on July 9, 11
and 14. Koekkoek, who is regularly invited to serve on the faculty of the String Academy at the IU School of Music, has performed worldwide with the Trompenberg Piano Quartet and the Chansson Trio, of which she is a founding member. She will perform with the quartet on July 14.
A special ticket package for the Brahms Chamber Music Festival is available. General admission tickets are $48 and student tickets are $30 for the series. Tickets for single concerts are available at the door, and are $8 general admission, $5 for students.
