Brancolini to direct IU Digital Library Program

Aug. 23, 2000

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Kristine Brancolini has been named director of the Indiana University Digital Library Program, a university-wide collaboration of the IU Libraries, the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology and academic researchers led by the School of Library and Information Science.

The collaboration capitalizes on IU's extensive holdings of scholarly material to make these available in digital form. More information is available at http://www.dlib.indiana.edu/

Announcing the appointment, Suzanne Thorin, Ruth Lilly University Dean of IU Libraries, said, "Kris brings extensive talent and experience to this important new role. The Indiana University Digital Library Program is growing rapidly and vigorously, and Kris will lead the program as it emerges as one of the nation's best. Her vision and energy will serve Indiana University well."

Brancolini will head strategic planning for integrating the digital library into library operations on the Bloomington campus, while further developing the program on all of the university's campuses. She will be responsible for new developments in digital library applications and for operation of IU's many successful digital library services, which include the Variations digital music library and the Dido art image library.

In addition, Brancolini will provide leadership for IU's digital library research and development projects, including the Hoagy Carmichael multimedia digital library collection and the Frank M. Hohenberger digital photograph collection.

"Innovation and development in digital libraries are major recommendations in IU's Information Technology Strategic Plan," said Michael McRobbie, IU vice president for information technology and chief information officer. "The university has made a significant commitment to developing digital library services and putting into place a solid information technology infrastructure to provide access to digital collections. Under Kris' leadership this program will certainly continue to grow and be successful."

Brancolini joined the IU Digital Library Program in 1997 as chief planner and has served as acting director since 1998. In these roles she coordinated ongoing digital library initiatives and led grant-writing efforts that resulted in external funding for three major digital library projects. She has authored numerous articles on digital libraries and multimedia collections and has given multiple presentations before national audiences.

She joined the IU Libraries in 1983 as media and reserve librarian in the Undergraduate Library. In 1985, she was appointed librarian for film studies and head of media and reserve services when it became a separate department.

She has a bachelor's degree in English from Scripps College and a master's degree in library science from IU. She has completed course work for a doctorate in instructional systems technology, also at IU.

IU is one of 23 members of the Digital Library Federation, a consortium of research libraries that are transforming themselves and their institutional roles by exploiting network and digital technologies. See http://www.clir.org/diglib/dlfhomepage.htm
