BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University will install Sharon Stephens Brehm as IU
Bloomington chancellor in a ceremony Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 4 p.m. in the IU
Auditorium.
Brehm, who served as provost at Ohio University from 1996 to 2001, was selected
in March to succeed Kenneth Gros Louis, who retired from the position after 21
years. Brehm officially began her duties at IU on July 1.
The hour-long installation ceremony will include speeches by IU President Myles
Brand and Bloomington Mayor John Fernandez, and welcomes from various university
and community leaders. It also will feature musical performances by the IU
African-American Choral Ensemble and students from the IU School of Music under
the direction of Dean Gwyn Richards. Brand will perform the official
installation of Brehm.
"This will be a great day in the life of our university," Brand said.
"Chancellor Brehm follows in the footsteps of visionary leaders for our
Bloomington campus. I am confident that she will add to that outstanding
tradition of leadership."
In addition to the ceremony, IU Bloomington will host several other free public
events.
On Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m. in Ballantine Hall, Brehm will host an academic
symposium, "The Chancellor and the Mystics." The symposium, moderated by IU
religious studies professor David Brakke, will feature panelists who will
examine the histories of women who claimed to have special access to divine
powers.
Prior to Wednesday afternoon's ceremony, the community is invited to attend the
Chancellor's Festival, a public luncheon held in Dunn Meadow from noon until 2
p.m. The festival will feature free food and entertainment and will highlight
IU's traditions and cultures.
