Series of educational talks set as part of "Hoosiers Outrun Cancer" event

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- An educational series of talks in conjunction with this year's "Hoosiers Outrun Cancer" event will begin Wednesday (Sept. 5) and include a talk by the doctor who helped a breast cancer patient stationed at the South Pole. All of the one-hour educational programs will be open to the public without charge. They will begin at 7 p.m. in Bloomington Hospital's Wegmiller Auditorium unless otherwise noted.
"Hoosiers Outrun Cancer" is a five-kilometer (3.1-mile) walk and run scheduled for Oct. 20, beginning at Assembly Hall on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington. Sponsors of this event and the educational series are the IU School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, the Herald-Times/Sunday Hoosier Times, and Bloomington Hospital & Healthcare System.
"Preparing to Participate in a 5K Run" will be the first program on Wednesday (Sept. 5). IU women's basketball coach Kathi Bennett will be the main speaker. Other presenters on Wednesday will discuss nutrition, training and fitness.
On Oct. 10, Dr. Kathy Miller of the IU School of Medicine in Indianapolis will discuss "What Are the Latest Cancer Treatments?" Miller helped Dr. Jerri Nelson, a doctor who developed breast cancer while stationed at the South Pole on a research mission. Miller assisted Nelson with a treatment program until she could be transported from the South Pole, and then worked with her at the IU Medical Center in Indianapolis.

The final presentation will be a lecture by John Seffrin, executive director of the American Cancer Society, on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. in Whittenberger Auditorium at IU's Indiana Memorial Union.
