IU Office of Communications and Marketing receives national award for second consecutive year June 27, 2001 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- For the second consecutive year, Indiana University's Office of Communications and Marketing has received a Circle of Excellence Medal for general news writing from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Judges awarded the bronze medal for "excellence in news writing" for five news releases written and distributed by OCM's Media Relations team. CASE is the leading professional organization for nearly 40,000 advancement professionals at educational institutions who work in alumni relations, communications and development. The releases highlighted quality research and activities by IU faculty. Contest entries included feature stories on efforts to save the California condor and the creator of a lifelike sculpture of late IU Chancellor Herman B Wells. Other entries focused on faculty research on zero tolerance policies in public schools, the effectiveness of full-body swimsuits in the Olympics, and using unemployment as an indication of economic health. "We are proud of our Media Relations team for earning such a prestigious honor. This award underscores both the quality of the institution we all serve and the commitment of the people who cover it," said Lisa Townsend, executive director of the IU Office of Communications and Marketing. A year ago, the same team of media relations professionals received the silver medal in the same contest category. Authors of the winning entries each year were Richard Doty, Hal Kibbey and George Vlahakis. This year, the University of Washington and North Carolina State University also were honored in this category. The awards will be presented this week at the CASE International Assembly in San Francisco. (George Vlahakis, 812-855-0846, gvlahaki@indiana.edu) |
