IU to name new dean of College of Arts and Sciences

March 24, 2000

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Kumble R. Subbaswamy has been recommended for appointment as the new dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University. His appointment awaits the approval of the Trustees of IU when they meet March 31.

Subbaswamy, who goes by the name Swamy, currently serves as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Fla.

Swamy is expected to begin his tenure as dean at IU on July 1, following former Dean Morton Lowengrub and Acting Dean Russell Hanson. Swamy also would become a full professor of physics at IU.

Kenneth R. R. Gros Louis, vice president for academic affairs and chancellor of the Bloomington campus, said Swamy was the enthusiastic choice of the search committee headed by James Craig, IU professor of psychology.

"Swamy enjoys a reputation for energy, enthusiasm and experience. I believe he will set a high standard for the College of Arts and Sciences, which already has done so much to distinguish the Bloomington campus," Gros Louis said.

Serving as dean at the University of Miami since 1997, Swamy has been a leader in efforts by the College of Arts and Sciences there to recruit students more aggressively, review its curriculum, establish faculty workload policies, and undertake a vigorous advancement effort. The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Miami has 17 departments, 310 faculty, 3,300 undergraduate majors and 500 graduate students.

"I am very pleased that Indiana University has been able to attract someone of Swamy's ability and experience. I look forward to working with him to advance the research interests of the faculty and to enhance the national reputation of departments in the College of Arts and Sciences," said IU President Myles Brand. "This is a pivotal time in the development of the college, and we are pleased to have found a leader who can help us achieve these goals."

While at the University of Kentucky, Swamy served on the Chancellor's Task Force on Realignment and Restructuring, the university's self-study team, and the Advanced Science and Technology Commercialization Center Planning Committee. He also has served as an invited participant in the Pew Higher Education Roundtable. He is an elected fellow of the American Physical Society, and he has research interests in computational chemistry and condensed matter physics.

Swamy earned his doctorate in physics from IU in 1976. He has previously taught at the University of California-Irvine and the University of Kentucky, where he served as chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy as well as associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
