13,489 IU degrees to be conferred in eight commencement ceremonies

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A total of 13,489 degrees will be conferred by Indiana University next month during commencement ceremonies on its eight campuses. An additional 1,669 degrees from Purdue University will be awarded on the six campuses where Purdue also offers courses.
Kenneth R.R. Gros Louis, retiring IU Bloomington chancellor and vice president for academic affairs, will be the Bloomington commencement speaker. He also will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, one of 11 honorary degrees that IU will confer during six different campus ceremonies. This will be IU's 172nd year of commencement activities.

The daily schedule of commencement observances will begin May 5 in Bloomington (more details are provided below). The other commencements will be: Southeast (IUS) -- May 7, 6:30 p.m. EDT, in the IUS Amphitheater near New Albany; Kokomo (IUK) -- May 8, 1:30 p.m. CDT, on the IUK campus; South Bend (IUSB) -- May 8, 6 p.m., in Notre Dame's Joyce Center; Fort Wayne (IPFW) -- May 9, 7 p.m., in the Fort Wayne Coliseum; Northwest (IUN) -- May 10, 5 p.m., in the Merrillville Star Plaza Theater; East (IUE) -- May 11, 6 p.m., in Richmond's Tiernan Center; and Indianapolis (IUPUI) -- May 13, 3 p.m., in the RCA Dome.
IU Bloomington will award 6,064 degrees. Other campuses will award the following number of IU degrees: IUPUI, 3,335; IU East, 235; IPFW, 833; IU Kokomo, 402; IU Northwest, 834; IU South Bend, 940; and IU Southeast, 846.
The figures include Bloomington degree candidates for May, June and August, as well as graduate students whose degrees have been or will be awarded on a monthly basis from January through July of this year. For all other campuses, these figures include degree recipients from December 2000, and degree candidates for May, June and August 2001. Also included are graduate students whose degrees have been or will be awarded on a monthly basis during the 2000-01 academic year.
IU Bloomington's commencement activities will begin May 4 with the traditional graduation send-off from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. CDT at Bryan House, the Bloomington campus home of IU President Myles Brand and his wife, IU Professor Peg Brand. The send-off will be followed by a baccalaureate from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. in the IU Auditorium.
The IU Bloomington commencement will be in Memorial Stadium on May 5 at 10 a.m. In the event of severe weather, commencement will be held in two sessions in Assembly Hall with the following schedule: at 10 a.m., Kelley School of Business; School of Education; School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation; School of Law; School of Music; School of Public and Environmental Affairs; and University Graduate School (doctoral candidates in above areas); at 3:30 p.m., College of Arts and Sciences; School of Continuing Studies; School of Journalism; School of Library and Information Science; School of Optometry; and University Graduate School (doctoral candidates in above areas).
