Code of Conduct Commission established at IU; results expected by this fall
May 25, 2000
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University has established the Code of Conduct Commission to design and implement guidelines for all student-athletes, coaches and personnel in the Athletics Department.
The Commission, which had its first meeting on Wednesday (May 24), was appointed by President Myles Brand and was asked to develop a clear and concise code of conduct that makes clear the university's expectations of all personnel and student-athletes within the Athletics Department.
"It is essential that we work together to develop firm, clear guidelines that spell out what is acceptable for coaches, student-athletes and Athletics Department personnel," Brand said in charging the 15-member commission. "In the past we have not completely spelled out acceptable behavior. That shortcoming will be corrected."
Brand said he asked the commission to set general guidelines, but to also consider issues involving compliance with NCAA, Big Ten and University guidelines, along with ensuring "sports-like behavior."
Athletic Director Clarence Doninger, chair of the commission, said he hopes the work can be completed by fall.
"We have certain guidelines now, but our coaches and student-athletes are so visible that it is incumbent that we establish even higher standards," Doninger said. "We cannot be too specific, but it is essential that we have concise guidelines that are workable and fair."
Doninger said the commission meetings will not be open to the public. "We certainly will keep the public and the media updated on our activities, but the sensitivities of these issues require us to be able to discuss and debate in full candor."
