IU Code of Conduct Commission presents recommendations for Athletics Code of Conduct to IU president and trustees
Sept. 15, 2000
NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- The Indiana University Athletics Code of Conduct Commission presented its recommendations for guidelines to govern the behavior of IU student-athletes, coaches and Athletics Department personnel to IU President Myles Brand and the IU Trustees at the Trustees meeting Friday (Sept. 15) in New Albany. IU trustees voted 7-0 to accept the recommendations (Trustees John Walda and Steve Ferguson were not in attendance).
The 11-page report, titled "Statement of Principles on the Conduct of Participants in Student Athletic Programs," is the product of nearly four months of meetings conducted by the 15-member commission appointed by Brand, which first met on May 24.
Divided into five sections, the document includes a brief introduction and sections articulating the obligations of all IU Athletics participants, principles specifically applicable to IU coaches and their staffs, obligations of those at IU responsible for overseeing the Athletics Department, and the principles applicable to the enforcement of the code and other responsibilities of participants.
The commission was formed by Brand "to develop firm, clear guidelines that spell out what is acceptable for coaches, student-athletes and Athletics Department personnel."
