Cunningham named director of Center for Research on Learning and Technology

March 27, 2000

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Donald J. Cunningham has been named director of the Indiana University School of Education's newest research arm, the Center for Research on Learning and Technology.

His appointment, effective immediately, is for five years. He had been acting director since December.

Cunningham is a professor of education, cognitive science and semiotic studies in the School of Education's Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology. He pursues an active program of research and development in computer-mediated instruction and is a leading contributor to the development of semiotic/constructivist theories of learning and instruction.

"Don has done an excellent job as acting director of the CRLT, building staff morale, managing existing research and development projects, and leading the center in new directions," said Donald Warren, university dean of the School of Education. "These achievements help explain why so many faculty, staff and students urged me to appoint him as director."

Established July 1, CRLT aims to promote and support a community of scholars dedicated to research on the design, use and implementation of technology to improve learning. Housed in the W.W. Wright Education Building on the Bloomington campus, CRLT has garnered more than $3 million in national grants to help teachers use technology to improve their teaching methods.

"The center represents the school and the university among constituents in government, business, philanthropic and educational organizations who are pioneering in the rapidly changing field of technology research and development," Warren said. "Don will serve us exceptionally well in these collaborations."
