IU student youngest delegate to represent Indiana at Democratic National Convention
Aug. 7, 2000
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Tiffany Benjamin, a junior from West Lafayette, Ind., majoring in journalism at Indiana University's Bloomington campus, will be the youngest delegate to represent the state of Indiana at next week's Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles.
Benjamin, 20, was originally elected as an alternate delegate at the state delegate elections earlier this spring, but was asked to attend the convention after another delegate had to step down.
"It's an exceptional honor, and I was very surprised I was chosen, because I'm so young," Benjamin said. "I think I'll probably be the person there who's snapping a million pictures and getting nervous whenever I meet important people."
Benjamin will serve as a delegate to probable Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore. The Indiana Democratic Party awards its 88 delegates to the party's candidates based on the percentage of votes each received in the May 2 state Democratic primary.
Benjamin's activities at IU include serving as vice president of the IU Association of Black Journalists during the 1999-2000 academic year.
