Holland, Butler and Goodbody scholarships presented by IU Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Dean of Students Office has announced the Spring 2000 recipients of the Beryl Showers Holland fellowships and the Susan Butler and Clara Jovan Goodbody scholarships.

The Beryl Showers Holland Fellowship is awarded by the Kappa Kappa Kappa Inc. state organization. Applicants must be seniors who graduated in May from the IU Bloomington campus and who plan to enter graduate or professional school in the fall. They also must be an Indiana resident and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.7 (out of 4.0). The awards are based on excellence in an academic field and promise in graduate or professional study and community or campus service.

The first-place Beryl Showers Holland Fellowship, in the amount of $2,000, was awarded to Ryan Tierney from Carmel, Ind. Tierney graduated from IU in May with majors in economics, chemistry and Spanish, and a minor in biology. He will study medicine at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo. He was a Wells Scholar, a member of Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity and the Board of Aeons, and was very active on campus, including participation in Dance Marathon and the Student Alumni Association.

The second-place Beryl Showers Holland Fellowship, in the amount of $1,000, was awarded to Andrew Overhiser from Decatur, Ind. Overhiser graduated in May from IU with a major in biochemistry. He will study medicine at the IU School of Medicine. He was active on campus, serving as a founding father and president of Beta Sigma Psi national Lutheran fraternity and as an associate instructor for a course in biosynthesis and physiology. He also conducted research in the study, isolation, and manipulation of RNase H domain of HIV-RT for eventual therapeutic use to combat HIV/AIDS.

The Susan Butler Award is given to a graduating senior woman who "in the judgment of the faculty shall have attained the highest standard for scholarship and character." This year's recipient of the $3,000 scholarship is Kelly Seib from Haubstadt, Ind. Seib graduated from IU in May with a major in biology and a minor in psychology. She will study medicine at the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago and hopes to specialize in pediatrics or neonatology. Her activities on campus included several honor societies, the Biology Club and Campus Crusade for Christ. She worked in patient care services in the emergency room of St. Mary's Medical Center.

The Clara Jovan Goodbody Award is given to a graduating senior woman who shows promise of distinction as a graduate student. This year's recipient of the $3,000 scholarship is Jill Johnson from Columbia City, Ind. Johnson graduated from IU in May with a major in human development and family studies and a minor in sociology. She will study law at the Loyola University Chicago School of Law and plans to pursue a career in child advocacy through either direct legal representation or public policy initiatives. Her campus activities included serving as a research assistant in applied health science, a senior peer adviser at the Career Development Center, and a recreation leader for at-risk youths. She was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and the IU Student Council on Family Relations.

The Butler and Goodbody scholarship award recipients were selected by a faculty committee. Members of the committee were Catherine A. Brown, associate dean for Research and Development in the IU School of Education and associate professor of education; Carolyn Calloway-Thomas, adjunct associate professor of Afro-American studies, associate professor of communication and culture, and director of the Inter-Racial Communications Project; Joseph C. Miller, professor of marketing; Carolyn Walters, associate librarian of IU Halls of Residence, assistant professor of library and information science, and head of undergraduate library services; and Suzanne Phillips, assistant dean of students.
