IU to present first Thomas Ehrlich Award for service learning

April 20, 2000

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University has created the Thomas Ehrlich Award to be presented annually to an IU professor at one of the eight campuses who has demonstrated excellence in service learning.

"Tom Ehrlich's leadership raised the level of visibility and enhanced the success of service learning programs on all our campuses," IU President Myles Brand said. "This award will honor his legacy and recognize faculty who continue to show leadership in this area."

The award, named after the former IU president, will be presented for the first time during Founders Day ceremonies in March 2001. The honoree will receive a one-time $1,000 stipend, and will become IU's nominee for Campus Compact's national Thomas Ehrlich Faculty Award for Service Learning, awarded annually during the national conference of the American Association for Higher Education. Campus Compact is an organization of college and university presidents that was formed to promote student volunteer service.

Recipients of IU's Ehrlich Award will have implemented service learning in a manner consistent with good practice, improved the study of service learning, and taken on leadership roles in their department, campus and community. Outstanding candidates also will have supported the integration of community or public service learning into the curriculum and made efforts to institutionalize service learning.

Ehrlich, who served as IU's 15th president from 1987 to 1994, has been a national leader in bringing service learning to the forefront. In 1991, Ehrlich was appointed by President Bush to the board of directors of the Commission on National and Community Service, and served as the board's chairman for a time. Ehrlich also has served as the executive-committee chair of Campus Compact.

There will be a call for nominations prior to the end of the spring 2000 semester.
