CORA SMITH BRECKENRIDGE ELECTED IU TRUSTEE

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Cora Smith Breckenridge of Elkhart today (June 30) was elected by IU alumni to a three-year term as a member of the Trustees of Indiana University. She defeated two other candidates.

A total of 39,338 votes was cast. The election results were: Breckenridge, 13,555 votes; B.J. Bischoff of Noblesville, 13,105; and Raymond W. Nicholson, M.D., of Evansville, 12,582. There were 96 voided ballots.

Breckenridge, who holds the Bachelor of Science (1959) and Master of Science (1963) degrees from IU, is a speech and language pathologist in the Elkhart Community Schools. Her husband, son and older daughter all have degrees from IU. Her youngest daughter is a student on IU's South Bend campus.

Breckenridge's term begins July 1. Three of IU's trustees are elected by alumni and the other six are appointed by the governor of Indiana. All serve for three-year terms except for the student appointee, who has a two-year term.
