IU fall enrollment and credit hours increase

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University President Myles Brand today (Sept. 16) announced official Fall 1999 student enrollment and credit hour numbers for all IU campuses. In making the announcement, Brand highlighted the following points:
- IU grew in both students and credit hours, compared to Fall 1998. Growth in credit hours surpassed last year's, setting another record. Credit hours total 1,013,397, which represents a 1.2 percent
increase or 12,034.5 additional hours compared to Fall 1998. The growth in head counts for this fall compared to last year is 0.1 percent or 120 students.
- IU Bloomington and IU Southeast in New Albany registered the highest student and credit hour enrollments in the history of these two campuses:
The IU Bloomington campus student enrollment set a new record. The Fall 1999 enrollment of 36,201 students is a 1.7 percent increase or 601 students over last year's count of 35,600. Credit hour production, also a record, increased by 2.2 percent over Fall 1998. Within this overall enrollment number, the campus has the largest undergraduate enrollment in its history.
IU Southeast also registered record high enrollments in both students and credit hours. The growth in student enrollment is 6,115, a growth of 5.2 percent over last year's record. Credit hours grew by another 4.5 percent this fall.
- IUPUI -- including IUPU Columbus -- reached another historic high in registering 275,942.5 credit hours for the fall semester.
- IU East in Richmond and IU Northwest in Gary registered increases in credit hours compared to Fall 1998:
IU East: 20,456, a 0.3 percent increase.
IU Northwest: 44,622, a 1.6 percent increase.
- The IPFW campus in Fort Wayne set an all-time record high in IU credit hours with 56,515, a 1.6 percent increase over Fall 1998.
- The IU Bloomington campus reported a 14 percent increase in the number of African American students in the entering class this year compared to Fall 1998.
- The IU Bloomington campus also enrolled 37 National Merit Scholars this fall, which is a 70 percent increase since 1996.
- The growth in credit hours on several campuses reflects an increase in the number of enrollees who are deciding to attend as full-time students.
