IU Trustees appoint Gerardo M. Gonzalez as university dean of the School of Education

March 31, 2000

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Gerardo M. Gonzalez has been named university dean of the Indiana University School of Education by the Trustees of IU. Acting at their meeting today (March 31), the IU trustees also approved his appointment as professor of educational leadership and policy studies in the school.

"Gerardo has spent more than a decade in a variety of leadership positions in the College of Education at the University of Florida," said Kenneth R. R. Gros Louis, IU vice president for academic affairs and chancellor of the Bloomington campus. "Most recently he has been the interim dean of that large and successful school, and I appreciate the breadth of responsibilities he brings to us."

Gonzalez was recommended by a search committee headed by Jack Cummings and Carlos Ovando, both IU professors of education.

In addition to serving as interim dean at the University of Florida, Gonzalez also had been associate dean for administration and finance as well as chair of the Department of Counselor Education. He received a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Florida and a doctorate in counselor education.

Gonzalez also is known in higher education circles as the 1977 founder and president of Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students (BACCHUS), the nation's largest collegiate organization for the prevention of alcohol abuse.

"My goal as dean will be to help build on the outstanding quality this school has so that in the not too distant future we'd be recognized as the number one graduate school of education at major public research universities in America," said Gonzalez." To achieve this goal, I believe all of us in the School of Education must work together with a shared vision to continue IU's commitment to strong pre-service teacher education and to strengthen our partnerships with and outreach to public schools and communities."

He cited several additional goals, including increasing the already substantive program of doctoral education and research, enhancing the school's leadership in use of technology, and adding to the diversity of faculty and students.

"I am honored by the confidence the faculty, students and staff have expressed in me through their invitation to lead the School of Education. My family and I are very excited about the opportunity to join such a wonderful community," he said.

While at Florida, Gonzalez also served as chair of the University Senate Nominating Committee, chair of the University Council on Teacher Education, and co-chair of the University Greek Task Force. In 1990, he was president of the Association of Hispanic Faculty.
