INDIANAPOLIS -- For the fourth consecutive year, the Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Indiana University's Kelley School of Business recognized 100 of Indiana's leading high-potential companies with its Growth 100 award at a special ceremony Tuesday (Oct. 13).
The Growth 100 award honors Indiana's rapid-growth, high-potential entrepreneurial companies with annual sales of at least $1 million. Other factors considered in the selection process are business concepts, attributes of the market, use of technology, and the ability to sustain high growth.
Each company is selected through a rigorous screening process similar to a "due diligence" examination. This year's Growth 100 companies had average annual sales of $7.7 million, and their growth rate averaged over 161 percent.
"These 100 companies have a phenomenal economic impact on the state, in terms of both gross sales and employment," said Elizabeth J. Gatewood, CEI director and holder of the Jack M. Gill Chair of Entrepreneurship.
"Between 1996 and 1998, Growth 100-awarded companies created more than 1,500 jobs in Indiana. That's particularly important in the face of large plant closings and downsizing," she continued.
The companies being recognized represent the entire state geographically, although 61 are based in the Indianapolis metropolitan area. "Recently, Dun & Bradstreet and Entrepreneur magazine named Indianapolis as one of the top cities in the nation for entrepreneurial business," Gatewood noted.
"The number of strong entrepreneurial companies we found there confirms that estimation, although we'd like Entrepreneur magazine to recognize the rest of the state, as well."
Companies that receive the Growth 100 award are invited to join the Growth 100 Network, a membership organization offering services such as networking with peers, educational programs and seminars, and research services.
The Growth 100 Program is co-sponsored by Borshoff Johnson & Co.; Cinergy/PSI; Colliers, Turley, Martin, Tucker; Ernst & Young; Ice Miller Donadio & Ryan; IU's Advanced Research Technology Institute; KeyBank; and Personnel Management Inc.
Recognition from the Kelley School of Business puts Growth 100 firms in good company. For four years, the school has been ranked in Success magazine's listings of top schools for entrepreneurs.
Individuals who wish to nominate their own or another's company for consideration for next year's awards should contact the center at 812-855-4248.
