March 20, 2000
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Lee Hamilton, director of the Indiana University Center on Congress and a retired congressman from Indiana, will present a lecture on Monday (March 27) at the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs.
Hamilton's lecture, "Changes I've Seen in Congress," will begin at 1 p.m. in the SPEA atrium of the Business/SPEA Building, located at the corner of 10th Street and Fee Lane. It is part of a colloquium series at the school.
The SPEA colloquium series brings high-profile lecturers to the IU campus from the public and private sectors to share their experiences and perspectives with students and faculty. Policymakers, congressional representatives, researchers, journalists and nonprofit agency directors address students each semester in schoolwide colloquia. They commonly visit SPEA classrooms during their visits to IU.
Hamilton, who received a doctor of jurisprudence degree from the IU School of Law-Bloomington in 1956, retired in January 1999 after 34 years of service in the U.S. Congress. Since then, he has served as director of the Center on Congress at IU and also as director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. His papers, memoranda, correspondence and speeches accumulated during his tenure in Congress are housed at IU's Lilly Library.
While serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, Hamilton was the ranking Democratic member of the House Committee on International Relations. He also chaired several committees, including the Joint Economic Committee, the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
The mission of the Center on Congress is to help improve the public's understanding of Congress and its role in our nation and society, its strengths and weaknesses, and its daily impact on the lives of people. The Center presents educational information on Congress in a variety of ways, including newspaper and radio commentaries, Web site materials, teaching materials and videos for students.
