BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Russell Hanson has been nominated as acting dean of the College of Arts and Sciences on the Indiana University Bloomington campus by Kenneth R.R. Gros Louis, vice president for academic affairs and chancellor of the Bloomington campus. Hanson will take over in late summer from Morton Lowengrub, who has accepted a position as vice president for academic affairs at Yeshiva University in New York.

"The College is a large and complex organization," Gros Louis said. "Russ knows it better than anyone and is uniquely qualified to continue to build on current initiatives such as the College Incentive Program and restructuring efforts. The stability of the College is assured."

Hanson credited Lowengrub with developing a fine faculty and staff, as evidenced by graduate and undergraduate programs known for quality and learning.

"The faculty and staff are responsible for these accomplishments," Hanson said, "and, thus, my foremost concern as acting dean will be to maintain quality, to reward excellence in teaching and research, and to assure that the College continues to be a place where faculty, staff and students can do their best work."

Hanson, who has served as executive associate dean of the College since 1997 and was associate dean for three years before that, is also a professor of political science. He holds master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Minnesota. His research interests include state politics and welfare policy.

Gros Louis has appointed a search committee, chaired by James Craig, professor of psychology, to select a new dean of the College. The group has begun meeting and is expected to advertise the position soon.
