Harwood named director of new initiative between School of Education and College of Arts and Sciences
Jan. 21, 2000
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- William Harwood, dean of the University Division at Indiana University's Bloomington campus, will assume directorship of the Twenty-First Century Teachers project, a new IU program designed to strengthen connections between the teaching of content areas and of classroom methods in the university's teacher preparation programs on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses. Harwood, an associate professor of science education, will direct efforts to bring together faculty in the arts and sciences and the School of Education to tackle the project.
"This is an opportunity for me to build on my experience with K-16 partnerships and to focus on one of the most exciting aspects of education: how to enrich the teaching and learning of basic subjects in our elementary and secondary schools," Harwood said. "That's the time when students' educational habits, inclinations and aspirations are set."
Sally Dunn, assistant director of advising, will serve as acting dean of the University Division while Harwood takes on these duties.
Harwood holds a doctorate in inorganic chemistry and previously served as assistant dean of undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland. In particular, he served on the team that developed Science Core Learning Goals required for all secondary students in the state of Maryland. He also chaired the University System's faculty review committee for those goals. In addition, Harwood is the co-author of a textbook on general chemistry.
"Bill's experience in these areas should help us make progress on what I believe to be one of the greatest challenges facing those of us who aspire to higher achievement for our elementary and secondary students," said Donald Warren, university dean of the School of Education.
"The College welcomes Bill's leadership on this effort," said Russell Hanson, acting dean of the IU College of Arts and Sciences. "We look forward to improving content learning for our students who are preparing to be teachers."
