'It's Groovy Baby' for IU Homecoming Oct. 8-9
Oct. 4, 1999
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University alumni will return to Bloomington to get "Groovy Baby" as they celebrate Homecoming 1999 this weekend, with a parade, pep rallies and football.
Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday (Oct. 8) with the 41st annual Homecoming Parade, for which the coach of the defending NCAA champion IU men's soccer team, Jerry Yeagley, will serve as grand marshal.
The parade will form on Rose Avenue next to Willkie Quad, between Third and Seventh streets, and step off at 5:30 p.m. Turning right onto East Third Street, the parade will advance to Indiana Avenue and end at the Sample Gates.
A pep rally will follow at 6:30 p.m. on the steps of the Student Building near the Sample Gates. Yeagley will be joined by head IU Football Coach Cam Cameron, IU team captains, cheerleaders, the RedSteppers, the pompom squad, and the Marching Hundred to prepare fans for Saturday's game. Fireworks in Dunn Meadow will follow the pep rally.
The Hoosier football team will square off against Northwestern University in Memorial Stadium at 1 p.m. During pre-game and halftime ceremonies Saturday, the 1999 homecoming king and queen will be introduced and winners of the float and window-painting contests will be announced. The Marching Hundred alumni band and alumnae RedSteppers will perform, and 50-year I-Men will be honored.
Tickets for the game can be purchased through the IU Athletic Ticket Office. Corporate and group rates are available. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 812-855-4006 or 1-800-447-4648.
Alumni and friends are also invited to the 12th annual Homecoming Luncheon on Saturday from 11 a.m. until game time at the John Mellencamp Pavilion next to Memorial Stadium. Entertainment will be provided. Tickets for the brunch -- $10 for adults and $6 for children age 12 and under -- are available by calling the IU alumni Association at 812-855-4822 or 1-800-824-3044. Tickets should be purchased in advance.
Also on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., will be an open house for all alumni and friends of IU at the Virgil T. DeVault Alumni Center on 17th Street across from IU's Assembly Hall. Refreshments will be provided. During the weekend, the classes of 1959 and 1974 will celebrate their 40th and 25th reunions with a variety of events.
Though the official schedule of events will begin with the homecoming parade, student groups will have already gotten into the homecoming spirit at the "Yell Like Hell" spirit competition on Thursday, starting at 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall at the Indiana Memorial Union.
"Yell Like Hell," sponsored by the Student Alumni Association, offers students a jump-start on showing their spirit for homecoming weekend. Participating groups prepare three-minute acts such as skits, dance routines, musical numbers and "lip-syncing." The act with the most homecoming spirit will be declared the winner.
Three special acts will also add to the excitement: the popular a capella performers Straight No Chaser and Ladies First, as well as the nationally recognized IU Pom Squad. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to watch. For more information on "Yell Like Hell," contact the Student Alumni Association at 812-855-9263.
