Oct. 4, 2001
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University alumni and students will "Let the Good Times Roll" as they celebrate Homecoming 2001 next Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-13.
Festivities will begin Friday with the 43rd annual Homecoming Parade. Newly appointed IU Bloomington Chancellor Sharon Brehm will serve as grand marshal. The parade will form on Rose Avenue, next to Willkie Quad and between Third and Seventh streets, and step off at 5:30 p.m. Turning west onto East Third Street, it will advance to Indiana Avenue and end at the Sample Gates.
A pep rally will follow at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Sample Gates, at the corner of Indiana and Kirkwood avenues. Chancellor Brehm will be joined by Head Football Coach Cam Cameron, IU team captains, cheerleaders, the Pom Squad, the RedSteppers and the Marching Hundred to prepare fans for Saturday's game against the University of Illinois. Fireworks in Dunn Meadow will follow the pep rally.
The Hoosier football team will square off against Illinois at 1 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium. During pre-game and halftime ceremonies, the 2001 homecoming king and queen will be introduced and winners of the float and window-painting contests will be announced. The Marching Hundred alumni band and alumnae RedSteppers will perform, and the 50-year I-Men will be honored.
Tickets for the football game can be purchased through the IU Athletics Ticket Office. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 812-855-4006 or 800-447-4648.
Alumni and friends also are invited to the 14th annual Homecoming Luncheon on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the John Mellencamp Pavilion next to Memorial Stadium. Entertainment will be provided. Tickets for the brunch, which cost $12 for adults and $6 for children age 12 and under, are available by calling the IU Alumni Association at 812-855-4822 or 800-824-3044. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door.
Also on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be an open house for all alumni and friends of IU at the Virgil T. DeVault Alumni Center on 17th Street across from Assembly Hall. Refreshments will be provided. During the weekend, the classes of 1961 and 1976 will celebrate their 40th and 25th reunions with a variety of events.
Student groups will get into the homecoming spirit at the "Yell Like Hell" spirit competition on Thursday (Oct. 11), starting at 7:30 p.m. in the newly renovated Willkie Center Auditorium. "Yell Like Hell," sponsored by the Student Alumni Association, offers students a jumpstart on showing their spirit for homecoming weekend. Participating groups prepare three-minute acts such as skits, dance routines, musical numbers and lip-syncing. The act with the most homecoming spirit will be declared the winner.
Three special acts also will be joining student groups to add to the excitement -- the popular a cappella performers Straight No Chaser and Ladies First and the nationally recognized IU Pom Squad. Admission is free and the general public is invited to watch. For more information on "Yell Like Hell," contact the Student Alumni Association at 812-855-SAA1 (812-855-7221).
