IU alumni from HPER honored

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Seven alumni awards were presented recently by the Indiana University School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation to distinguished graduates for their personal and professional accomplishments.
The awards were presented at a special luncheon on campus by HPER Dean Tony Mobley and Associate Dean David Gallahue.
The International Distinguished Alumni honor was presented to Jose Medalha, a leading basketball coach in Brazil who coached the 1992 Brazilian Olympic team to fifth place.
The Endwright Distinguished Alumni Service Award recipients were Hugh Jessop in applied health science, Walt Bellamy in kinesiology and, posthumously, Lee Burton in recreation and park administration.
Jessop is director of the IU Health Center; Bellamy is a former basketball All American at IU and a member of the NBA Hall of Fame who resides in Atlanta, Ga.; and Burton was a realtor, investor and former parks and recreation director of Indianapolis who succumbed to cancer earlier this year.
Patty Distinguished Alumni Service Awards were presented to G. Daniel Howard, vice president for university advancement at the University of North Alabama; Andrew Jackson, professor of health and human performance at the University of Houston; and Anne Binkley, senior lecturer in the School of Human Movement, Recreation and Performance at Victoria University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia.
