First HPER alumni survey at IU reports success in finding jobs

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Alumni from Indiana University's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation find jobs soon after graduation, and many soon earn in excess of $40,000 annually.
These are among the findings in the first HPER alumni survey compiled by school officials. Some 750 alumni were queried in the survey, with 388 replying for a response rate of 51 percent. Alumni were surveyed from the 1992, 1995 and 1998 graduating classes, reflecting the three HPER fields of applied health science, kinesiology, and recreation and park administration.
"We are pleased by the findings in this first-ever survey of our alumni," said Dean Tony Mobley, "and we look forward to building upon this base in future alumni surveys." He said he was particularly pleased to learn of the prompt professional placements of the graduates and that the salary levels were competitive within the industry.
Survey results showed the $30,000 to $40,000 salary range was most often cited for those employed full-time in a field related to their major. Some 28 percent of the undergraduates and 42 percent of the graduate students were in this category. Approximately 25 percent of the alumni were earning more than $40,000 annually, with 20 percent of the graduate student alumni earning $50,000 or more.
Regarding job placement, 84 percent obtained work within six months of beginning the job search, and 45 percent obtained employment within the first month. For graduate alumni, 52 percent found jobs within one month.
Other findings in the survey included:
-- 87 percent of the graduate alumni and 73 percent of the undergraduate alumni reported that HPER prepared them adequately or better for their current jobs.
-- 73 percent were satisfied with the quality of their HPER internship.
-- 77 percent of the graduate students and 59 percent of the undergraduate alumni were employed full time in their major field of study.
