IU student publications receive national awards
Dec. 12, 2000
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Three Indiana University student publications won national Pacemaker awards at a recent ceremony at the National Collegiate Media Convention in Washington, D.C.
"The national Pacemakers are considered the Pulitzer prizes for overall excellence in college journalism, and we continue to be blessed with outstanding, dedicated student journalists," said David Adams, IDS publisher and adjunct professor of journalism at IU. "In winning three national Pacemakers in one year, these students have achieved a national first in college media circles."
The Indiana Daily Student, the 133-year-old student-run daily newspaper at IU Bloomington, was one of five daily publications to receive the award. This marked the seventh time in 10 years that the IDS has won the award, which is given on the basis of coverage, content, reporting and writing quality, design, and photography, among other criteria.
Former students Joel Eskovitz, currently a reporter with the Associated Press in Arizona, and Olivia Clarke, a general assignment reporter with The Journal Gazette in Ft. Wayne, Ind., served as editors-in-chief during the 1999-2000 academic year for which the award was given.
This year the ACP made online publications eligible to win the Pacemaker. The Indiana Digital Student -- the online version of the IDS -- was the only online media outlet affiliated with a campus daily to pick up the award. IU senior Jodi Miskell of Seymour, Ind., was the new media director, and senior Rob Pongsajapan of Crown Point, Ind., was the principal designer of the award-winning site.
IU's student yearbook, the Arbutus, was awarded a Pacemaker for its 1999-2000 edition. The co-editors of the winning edition were Kevin Stuart of Bloomington, Ind., and Jen Fish of Ottawa Lake, Mich.
