IU student newspaper and yearbook win national college media awards

Dec. 1, 1999

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's student newspaper, the Indiana Daily Student, was awarded a 1998-99 National Newspaper Pacemaker Award by the Associated Collegiate Press and the Newspaper Association of America at the National College Media Convention in Atlanta recently.

This was the eighth time in 10 years that the IDS has received the prestigious award, given annually to five daily newspapers at four-year colleges and universities.

IU's student-run yearbook, the Arbutus, also won a Pacemaker award for excellence. This is the seventh time in eight years that the Arbutus has received this honor.

"It's the dream of many schools to even be nominated once for these top awards," said David Adams, publisher and faculty adviser of the IDS and the Arbutus. "For our students to continue to win such high recognition is indeed a distinct achievement."

The IDS also received "Best in Show" honors, awarded by the ACP and Collegiate Media Advisors for general excellence. The IDS was chosen from more than 380 student newspapers that were entered in the competition.

The on-line version of the IDS, the Indiana Digital Student, won first-place awards for design and content from the ACP, as well as an award for best main page presentation. Several IDS staffers won awards for individual achievement in reporting, design and advertising.

"We continue to be blessed with outstanding, talented students in all areas of media work," Adams said.
