BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In celebration of International Education Week, Nov. 13-17, the Indiana University Office of International Services will offer students in Indiana's elementary, middle and high schools the opportunity to take part in six programs broadcast from the IU School of Education using interactive videoconferencing.

The lectures, presented by international students at IU, will give the international students an opportunity to share their cultures with students who may never visit their homelands. Students participating in the 45-minute exchanges will be able to question the speakers to gain a better understanding of faraway nations.

Four of the programs will promote understanding of Indiana's fastest-growing ethnic groups: Russian, Latino, Mexican and Burmese. Two other programs will focus on the daily lives of Korean and Bulgarian students in their homelands.

"These presentations will not only educate students in Indiana about how people live in other countries, but more importantly it will foster understanding and appreciation of the differences among the world's citizens," said Kenneth Rogers, associate dean and director of IU's Office of International Services.

International Education Week is a national initiative established by U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley and U.S. Secretary of State Madeline K. Albright as a cooperative response by their departments to a presidential policy directive on international education.

IU was awarded a federal grant from the Department of State to aid in the execution of this unique program.
