IU SPEA and chemistry professors named to list of world's most influential researchers
Oct. 3, 2001
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Ronald A. Hites, Indiana University Distinguished Professor, and John C. Huffman, IU Senior Scientist in Chemistry, have been honored with inclusion by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) in the group's new online data base of the world's most cited and influential scientific authors.
Hites is one of only 96 scientists to be designated as a highly cited author for his work in applied science or engineering, while Huffman is one of 98 highly cited authors in the field of chemistry. Researchers selected for inclusion comprise less than one half of one percent of the almost 5 million researchers in the ISI Citation Database from 1981 to 1999.
Hites and Huffman are featured at ISIHighlyCited.com, a Web site for the American Chemical Society National Meeting. ISIHighlyCited.com brings together the publication and achievement records of preeminent researchers. About 19 million articles or source records were identified and evaluated to determine the most highly cited researchers in their respective disciplines.
Hites teaches environmental chemistry in IU's School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Prior to joining the IU faculty in 1979, he was an associate professor of chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he also received his doctorate.
In 1991, Hites won the American Chemical Society's Award for Creative Advance in Environmental Science and Technology. In 1993, he won the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry's Founders Award. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has served as the associate editor of Environmental Science and Technology since 1990.
Huffman received his doctorate in physical chemistry from IU in 1974 and has been director of the highly regarded Indiana University Molecular Structure Center since its inception in the same year. He also recently was named director of the Informatics Research Institute in the newly formed School of Informatics at IU.
Huffman has been recognized by ISI as one of the most highly cited scientists since they started compiling data and previously was identified as the 11th most prolific scientist in the world for the decade 1981-90.
Researchers are selected for ISIHighlyCited.com based on the total number of citations received by their articles within a given category -- a quantifiable demonstration of their impact or influence. Since new material is published daily and citation counts are adjusted at the same time, ISI regularly will expand the list of highly cited researchers as new leaders emerge.
ISIHighlyCited.com is now available online at http://www.ISIHighlyCited.com with four categories: neuroscience, engineering, physics and chemistry. Over the next several months, the online gateway will grow to include 17 additional categories. ISI is a business of the Thomson Corp. and provides Web-based information to researchers, information specialists and administrators in diverse fields.
