International symposium on music information retrieval to be hosted Oct. 15-17 at IU Bloomington

Sept. 5, 2001

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The second annual International Symposium on Music Information Retrieval -- the world's only music information retrieval (music IR) conference -- will be held Oct. 15-17 at Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind., U.S.A.

ISMIR 2001 builds upon the very successful ISMIR 2000 meeting held last year in Plymouth, Mass.

Music IR concerns the study of systems for indexing, searching and recalling musical data. It has the potential for a wide variety of applications in education, academia and entertainment.

This year's program is rich in content and variety; the resulting information interchange will enable scholars around the world to move more quickly toward viable solutions to many problems concerning music IR.

The keynote address will be delivered by David Cope, a composer, music theorist and professor of music at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Cope has been interested for many years in what might be described as simulating specific musical styles by computer. He is the creator of software that implements, books that describe and CDs that demonstrate (with Bach, Mozart, Prokofiev, and other composers) his unique and remarkably successful approach. More recently, he has been working on a program that analyzes music for allusions to other music.

The symposium will include both invited and submitted papers, including 20 presentations and 20 posters. The registration fee is $150 for those who register before Sept. 15. The final registration deadline is Sept. 29.

Indiana University is one of the oldest universities in the United States. IU serves more than 100,000 students on its eight campuses. The Bloomington campus, with its unique woodland setting, rich cultural traditions and historic architecture, is considered one of the most beautiful in the United States and is home to IU's world-renowned School of Music.
