EDITORS: As tensions mount in the Middle East between Israelis and Palestinians, here is information on IU experts who are available to speak to the media on subjects related to the conflict. A recent visitor to Rumallah, site of Thursday's killings of two Israeli soldiers and the retaliatory attacks, David Fidler, IU associate professor of law, has seen firsthand the devastation that the Israeli/Palestinian clashes have brought to the region. Fidler visited the embattled town and the Gaza Strip in July 2000 as part of his duties with the World Bank, for which he currently serves as an international legal consultant on foreign investment in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. He also has served as a consultant for the United Nations Development Program on the Palestinian Investment Law, and he was responsible for drafting a revised version of the law for the United Nations in its work with the Palestinian Authority. Fidler can be reached at 812-855-6403 or dfidler@indiana.edu
As former director of the American research center in Cairo, Iliya Harik, professor of political science, is knowledgeable on Middle Eastern comparative politics and the history of Middle Eastern conflict, including clashes between Israeli and Palestinian factions. He is most interested in discussing issues other than the military aspects of the conflict. Harik is best reached at home, 812-332-3881, or at harik@indiana.edu
