BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Pending approval next month (August) by the Trustees of Indiana University, Ruth Janssen Person will be named the new chancellor for the IU Kokomo campus.
Person is currently vice president for academic affairs and professor of business administration at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. If approved as chancellor, she will succeed Emita Hill, who announced her retirement earlier this year.
"We are all very pleased that Ruth has accepted our offer to join the Indiana University family," said IU President Myles Brand. "The breadth and depth of her experience and education were important factors in her selection, and she understands the needs of campuses that serve large populations of commuter and non-traditional students. I believe that she will be an enormously effective leader for IU Kokomo for many years to come.
"I am confident that Ruth will build on the successful eight-year tenure of Chancellor Hill," Brand added. "Under Dr. Hill's leadership, IU Kokomo has expanded its outreach through new academic programs; created numerous partnerships with area schools and businesses; supported diversity among students, faculty and staff; brought an international perspective to the campus; and led the expansion of campus facilities. Her impact has been great and will long be remembered."
Brand also commended the work of the search committee, headed by Charlie Nelms, IU's vice president for student development and diversity. He said, "Committee members put in many hours sorting through a strong group of applicants. They identified a clear vision of what type of leader would do the best job in taking IU Kokomo into the next century."
Prior to her arrival at Angelo State, Person served as the vice president for academic affairs for Ashland University in Ohio, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, associate director for academic programs for the Arizona Board of Regents, and dean of the college of library science at Clarion University of Pennsylvania. She has held several other academic positions as well.
Person received a bachelor's degree from Gettysburg College in history and psychology, an M.S. degree in administration from George Washington University, and a Ph.D. degree in management and library and information science from the University of Michigan. She participated in the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University.
The trustees will meet Aug. 19 in Bloomington to act upon the nomination of Person. If approved, the new chancellor will have a news conference later that day on the Kokomo campus.
