Events to remember Martin Luther King Jr. planned at IU Bloomington Jan. 12-20

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A series of forums, musical concerts, exhibits, volunteer initiatives and competitions have been planned in January for the Indiana University Bloomington campus in remembrance of the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

A resolution passed by the Trustees of IU on Jan. 24, 1997, provided for the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as an official university-wide holiday. This year it falls on Jan. 17.

In accordance with the resolution, which called for the university "to provide events which highlight the life and philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.," community and university partnerships throughout the state have spent months planning commemorations of many types.

What follows is a listing of events at IU Bloomington to remember King and celebrate his impact upon the American consciousness. Events are presented by date and in chronological order:

Wednesday, Jan. 12

"A Celebration of Dance" -- A teach-in to explore the rich heritage of African-American culture through the history of dance, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the McNutt Quadrangle Flame Room, sponsored by Residential Programs and Services and CommUNITY Educators. "History in the Harmony" -- A teach-in to look at the evolution of black music and its role as a unifying force and catalyst for social change, from 8 to 9 p.m. in the Wright Quadrangle Formal Lounge, sponsored by Residential Programs and Services and CommUNITY Educators. Thursday, Jan. 13

IU Bloomington Professional Council Forum/Breakfast -- Vice Chancellor Charlie Nelms and Associate Vice Chancellors Gloria Gibson, Frank Motley and Alberto Torchinsky will discuss as a panel the implementation of the recommendations of the report 20/20: A Vision for Achieving Equity and Excellence at IU-Bloomington and the development of the IU Office for Academic Support & Diversity. The forum will be at the Frangipani Room in the Indiana Memorial Union. Doors will open at 7:15 a.m., and a continental breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8 a.m. The discussion will begin at 8 a.m. The event is sponsored by the Bloomington Professional Council and 2000 MLK Planning Committee. Friday, Jan. 14

IU School of Music King Tribute -- Noted American baritone William Warfield will perform in the IU School of Music's second annual Martin Luther King celebration on Friday, Jan. 14. A gala benefit dinner will precede the free concert. The musical tribute, which will begin at 8:30 p.m. in Recital Hall (in Merrill Hall), will feature hymns and spirituals performed by students from the IU School of Music, the IU African American Arts Institute's Choral Ensemble and Dance Company, and IU Soul Revue. Proceeds from the $50- per-person dinner, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Musical Arts Center lobby, will benefit the School of Music scholarship named in honor of Dr. King. "The Origins of Steppin'" -- A teach-in to explore the heritage of historically black fraternities and sororities and the creative expression and origins of "steppin.'" The program will be from 7 to 8 p.m. in the McNutt Quadrangle Flame Room, sponsored by Residential Programs and Services and CommUNITY Educators. Saturday, Jan. 15

Community Service Agency Volunteer Day -- IU student volunteers will be given the opportunity to work with community volunteers at nonprofit agencies in and around Bloomington. The volunteers will learn more about the agencies, their missions and the role of volunteers, with the focus on breaking down the social and economic barriers that divide us as a nation and bringing people together for service to others. Transportation via Bloomington Transit will be free to IU student volunteers. The project is sponsored by the Student Activities Office and Volunteer Student Bureau. The voice master class with William Warfield originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 15, at 1:30 p.m. in Recital Hall has been cancelled. It will be rescheduled at a later date. Sunday, Jan. 16

Archie Bunker's Neighborhood -- A live role-playing performance, where students are assigned roles to play, within this special neighborhood that explores diversity and multiculturalism. The program will be from 8 to 11:30 p.m. at the Collins Living Learning Center coffee house, sponsored by Collins LLC. "A Tribute to King" -- A program honoring King and his contributions to society will feature performances by Heritage School students. The event will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Whittenberger Auditorium in the Indiana Memorial Union, sponsored by Residential Programs and Services, CommUNITY Educators, and the IU Department of Afro-American Studies. Monday, Jan. 17

Respect Day Signature Drive -- The eighth annual Respect Day is meant to encourage all staff, faculty and students to work toward the creation of a more hospitable and supportive campus environment. All persons are urged to sign a pledge to respect and value the commonalities and differences of all, at various locations around the campus.

Martin Luther King Day Breakfast -- An invitation-only event at 7:30 a.m. in Alumni Hall of the Indiana Memorial Union, sponsored by the 2000 IU Bloomington King Day Committee. For more information, contact Wainona Collins at 812-855-9632.

Multicultural "Read Out" -- A multicultural "read-out," from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Monroe County Public Library, to raise awareness of children's literature and literacy issues, featuring presentations of children's books by diverse community and campus organizations. Children enjoy stories fostering sensitivity to all peoples and ways of life. The event is sponsored by the Indiana Reading Team. For more information, contact Ryan Hickey at 812-349-3100.

"A Day On! Not A Day Off" -- Volunteers from IU and from the community will work at nonprofit agencies and reflect on their service at the end of the project. All will receive recognition at the evening celebration. The project is sponsored by the City of Bloomington Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission. King Day Convocation -- The program, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Whittenberger Auditorium of the Indiana Memorial Union, will include a brief recollection of King's life, presentations by student groups, musical selections, and a pledge to the ideals of Dr. King. "Unity Summit/The Real Deal" -- Audience participation in role-playing skits that dramatize and bring to light what really goes on in our lives as diverse people of America. Group discussions will follow each skit. Boxed lunches will be provided. The program will be from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Frangipani Room of the Indiana Memorial Union, sponsored by the Black Student Union, IUSA and the Student Activities Office. "Dr. King's Message in Context" -- A discussion on remembering Martin Luther King's message, led by Claude Clegg, IU professor of American history, and Lawrence Hanks, IU associate professor of political science. Open House for Community Celebration -- The celebration, between 6 and 6:45 p.m., will feature displays of winning King contest Web pages, sponsored by the City of Bloomington Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission. It will be in Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church, at the corner of Fourth and Washington streets. Community Evening Birthday Celebration -- ABC News correspondent Renee Poussaint will present the keynote speech, and the IU African American Choral Ensemble will perform. The first Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission Award will be presented; it will be awarded annually. The program will begin at 7 p.m. in the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave., sponsored by the 2000 IU Bloomington King Day Committee and the City of Bloomington Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission. A public reception featuring displays of winning Web pages, Poussaint, and book signing by Rochelle Riley will be held immediately afterward in Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church, at the corner of Fourth and Washington streets.
