INAUGURAL KELLEY SCHOLARS ANNOUNCED; 10 OF THE STATE'S TOP STUDENTS TO STUDY BUSINESS AT INDIANA UNIVERSITY
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The first 10 Kelley Scholars have been selected by the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University Bloomington. They were chosen from among the brightest high school students in Indiana.
Kelley Scholars, all incoming freshmen this fall who intend to major in business at IU Bloomington, will receive tuition and fees, a stipend for living expenses, and other funding -- which may include internships and overseas study. The award is for four years and has an annual value of more than $11,000.
The Kelley Scholars Program is funded by a $23 million gift from E.W. Kelley and his family, made to IU last fall. The university named its School of Business for the Kelley family in acknowledgment of the extent of the gift -- the largest single donation in IU's history.
"The Kelley Scholars program provides the opportunity for the Kelley School of Business and Indiana University to attract and retain the finest students in the world," said Dan Dalton, the Kelley School's dean. "The combination of the Kelley Scholars' special curriculum and the level of financial support to the students is unparalleled in any school of business in the country."
The initial Kelley Scholars were selected from a group of 60 students who already had been accepted to IU and who, because of their outstanding academic records, were invited to apply for the Kelley program. Applications included references, high school transcripts and several personal statements on a variety of topics, including an essay.
Nineteen finalists were invited to the IU Bloomington campus Feb. 14-15. The weekend included extensive interviews with faculty members, submission by each candidate of a sample of his or her writing, campus tours, and a dinner with Kelley.
The Kelley Scholars announced today were selected on the basis of their performance that weekend. The remaining finalists will receive scholarships of $3,500 to $5,500.
