MEDIA ALERT: IU EXPERTS AVAILABLE
TO COMMENT ON VIOLENCE IN CHILDREN
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The following Indiana University professors can comment on incidents of adolescents taking guns to their schools and shooting at classmates and teachers:
John E. Bates, professor of psychology at the Bloomington campus, has studied the origins of children's behavioral problems and social competencies for a number of years, partly with the goal of predicting which children will get into trouble as they get older. By studying the behavior of children from elementary school through middle school into high school, he examines how they develop aggressive behavior. He also examines the roles of early family and peer experience, family process, peer relations and social cognitive biases in children. Bates can be reached at 812-855-8693 (office) or 812-336-4236 (home) or e-mail bates@indiana.edu.
Dr. Theodore A. Petti, the Arthur B. Richter Professor of Child Psychiatry in the IU School of Medicine at the Indianapolis campus, has treated many violent children and adolescents in his clinical work. Petti can be reached at 317-941-4160 (office) or 317-257-2799 (home) or e-mail tpett@iupui.edu.
Russell Skiba, professor of counseling and educational psychology in the IU School of Education at the Bloomington campus, is director of the IU Institute for Child Study, and he also directs a clinic of the school psychology program serving children with learning and behavioral problems, as well as their families. Skiba teaches in areas of intervention and consultation for children, especially management of classroom behavior. He conducts research in school discipline and violence prevention and in other services for students exhibiting challenging behavior. Skiba can be reached at 812-855-5549 (office) or 812-339-1638 (home) or e-mail skiba@indiana.edu.
