IU President Myles Brand to address National Press Club

Jan. 19, 2001

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Indiana University President Myles Brand will discuss the proper role of athletics in academics in a nationally broadcast speech at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday (Jan. 23) at 1 p.m. EST.

Brand, who received widespread public attention last September when he dismissed IU men's basketball coach Bob Knight, will speak about the balancing act a university administration must perform in order to maintain a successful collegiate sports program that does not eclipse the university's primary focus -- academics. He also will detail the problems that arise when collegiate sports programs go unchecked, and propose solutions for keeping them in line.

Brand, who has served as IU's president since 1994, previously held the same post at the University of Oregon for five years. Prior to his tenure at the UO, Brand was the provost at Ohio State University for three years. During his six-plus years at IU, Brand has focused his efforts on strengthening the liberal arts tradition of the Bloomington campus, while making IU one of the nation's leaders in information technology and distance learning.

Brand holds faculty appointments in the philosophy departments at Indiana University Bloomington and at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. His academic research investigates the nature of human action, focusing on intention, desire, belief and other cognitive states.

He held his first teaching post at the University of Pittsburgh, where he became assistant chair of the philosophy department in 1971. One year later, he was tapped to lead the philosophy department at the University of Illinois-Chicago, where he helped boost the program to top 10 national ranking. He later repeated the feat at the University of Arizona, where he served as dean of the faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences and dean of Arts and Sciences. From Arizona, Brand went to Ohio State University as provost and then to the University of Oregon as president before coming to Indiana University in 1994.

Brand's speech will be broadcast live on National Public Radio and via the Internet through the National Press Club's Web site, http://npc.press.org. The speech also will be taped and aired by C-Span.

Tickets to the luncheon are available by calling the National Press Club at 202-662-7501, or by e-mailing pnelson@npcpress.org (Susan Dillman, Director of Media Relations, 812-855-0850, sdillman@indiana.edu)
