IU EXPERT ON SCHOOL LAW AVAILABLE
TO DISCUSS SUPREME COURT RULING ON SEXUAL HARASSMENT

On May 24, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that school districts can be sued when they know of severe and offensive sexual harassment between students but do nothing to stop it.

Martha McCarthy, Chancellor's Professor of Education at IU, has closely followed the issue of sexual harassment in schools since the 1970s. In the past year, she has written about the topic in the Journal of Law and Education, composed a research bulletin for Phi Delta Kappa, and given presentations on the subject at three national conferences.

McCarthy is past president of the Education Law Association and a recipient of the ELA award for contributions to the field of school law. Widely regarded as a leading scholar in this field, McCarthy is co-author of the leading school law textbook, Public School Law: Teachers' and Students' Rights, now in its fourth edition. At IU, McCarthy specializes in the study of education law and policy and coordinates the School of Education's educational leadership program.

McCarthy can be reached during business hours in her office, 812-856-8384, or in the evening at home, 812-334-0712.
