"The Indiana Legislature has demonstrated very strong support of higher education in the biennial budget approved last night. This budget, which includes the most generous capital appropriation in IU's history, shows great foresight on the part of our elected officials. Many lawmakers contributed to this very successful budget, but we are especially appreciative of the work by the Bloomington delegation: Senator Vi Simpson, Rep. Mark Kruzan and Rep. Peggy Welch.
"While one never expects to receive everything we request in a state budget bill, it is obvious that Indiana's legislators are listening to us and attempting to address higher education's needs. At a time when other states are recognizing the importance in investing in research and technology, it is gratifying to see that Indiana is taking similar action to assure our economic competitiveness.
"I also wish to thank the Governor and the budget conferees in particular for their support of the higher education research and technology initiatives which were proposed during this legislative session. Their support for the 21st Century Research and Technology Fund and their vision in continued support for Indiana University's Internet2 hub at IUPUI illustrates their understanding of the importance of our state's cutting edge position in these vital areas. Also, we are especially pleased with the allocations for the Midwest Proton Radiation Institute at IU Bloomington and the Van Nuys Medical Science Building on the IUPUI campus."
