Free concert by Mellencamp at IU on Thursday

Aug. 30, 2000

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Rock star John Mellencamp will perform a free acoustic concert Thursday (Aug. 31) at 1 p.m. at Indiana University. The concert is open to the public.

The event will be outdoors on Woodlawn Field at the intersection of Woodlawn and Tenth streets in the heart of the campus. Free parking will be provided at Memorial Stadium on Seventeenth Street, and free university buses will bring patrons from the stadium to Woodlawn Field. Classes are in session at IU, so there will be no parking near the campus location where the concert will take place.

No coolers or glass items will be allowed on the buses or inside Woodlawn Field.

"John Mellencamp is a very close friend of Indiana University and an icon in Bloomington," said Christopher Simpson, IU vice president for public affairs and government relations. "This free acoustic concert will be a great opportunity for our students to see Bloomington's favorite rock star. The fact that John is willing to do this illustrates the generosity he has shown toward IU for more than a decade."

Mellencamp, who lives in the Bloomington area, has presented several impromptu concerts in major cities at no charge this summer. The acoustic events have generally involved two backup musicians and a limited sound system, and they have been given at midday for about one hour.

The local concert was announced on Mellencamp's Web site as the last show of the free tour that has previously stopped in Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Boston.

The rock singer was IU's commencement speaker last May, when he received an honorary doctorate for his achievements as a musician.
