Campuswide moment of silence planned Wednesday to honor Wells

April 3, 2000

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- As the clock in the Student Building tower at Indiana University Bloomington chimes at noon Wednesday (April 5), IU students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends are being encouraged to pause there for a moment of silence and reflection in honor of Herman B Wells, the university's late chancellor and former president.

For those who will be in class, the sponsoring organization, the IU Student Association, is asking faculty members to observe a minute of silence in their classes and share personal remembrances about Wells, who died March 18 at his home in Bloomington at age 97.

After a minute of silence, the tower chimes in the familiar campus landmark will play for 10 minutes. The Student Building is located next to Franklin Hall in the Old Crescent area of the campus. The chimes of the Metz Carillon Tower, located off Linglebach Lane, also will be played for 10 minutes.

Wells was the only person to lead IU three times in its 179-year history and shepherded it through an important era in its development into an internationally recognized center of research and scholarship.

Later on Wednesday, IU will celebrate Wells and his legacy in a program at 7:30 p.m. at the IU Auditorium in Bloomington. Current and past living IU presidents, public officials, distinguished faculty, student leaders and alumni are expected to participate in "A Celebration of a Life: Remembering the Life of Herman B Wells." The university is using a ticketing system in order to accommodate the expected demand for seats in the 3,700-seat facility.

Free tickets will be available at the IU Auditorium box office; the Indiana Memorial Union Activities Desk, located on the first floor adjacent to Alumni Hall; and the IU Visitor Information Center, which is located in the Carmichael Building, Suite 104, at the corner of Indiana and Kirkwood avenues. Tickets may be obtainable at the door, subject to availability.
