Trustee President Morris to be nominated to U.S. ambassador position in Rome

Oct. 17, 2001

BLOOMINGTON. Ind. -- President George W. Bush has announced his plans to nominate James T. Morris, president of the Indiana University Board of Trustees, to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies on Food and Agriculture Organizations in Rome.

The agencies take a lead role in addressing international issues of agriculture, nutrition and food supply. Morris would replace former Sen. George McGovern, who has served in the post since 1998.

"Jim Morris has an outstanding record of public service and of getting things done. We have been most pleased that he has brought those attributes to our Board of Trustees, and I am certain he will have a similarly positive impact in this new role," said IU President Myles Brand.

The appointment will require confirmation by the U.S. Senate. As that process moves forward, Morris will continue to serve as president of the Board of Trustees.

Morris was elected to the Board of Trustees by vote of the alumni in 1996 and was re-elected in 1999. He was chosen as board president by the Trustees earlier this year. His current term on the board expires on June 30, 2002.

Morris is chairman and chief executive officer of IWC Resources Company and its principal subsidiary, the Indianapolis Water Company. From 1984 to 1989, he was president of the Lilly Endowment. He was chief of staff to current Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar from 1967 to 1973 when Lugar was mayor of Indianapolis. He earned his undergraduate degree from IU and an M.B.A. degree from Butler University.

He also has been active in a wide variety of local, state and national organizations, including the United States Olympic Committee, United Way of Central Indiana and the American Red Cross.
