Wreaths hung on Sample Gates in mourning for victims

Sept. 12, 2001

On Wednesday at 2 p.m., Indiana University students, faculty and staff gathered at the Sample Gates on the western edge of the Bloomington campus. Upon the often-photographed gates hung a pair of wreaths adorned with colorful bouquets of flowers. IU President Myles Brand and Bloomington Chancellor Sharon Brehm dedicated the wreaths in a brief ceremony.

"These two wreaths have been placed at the Sample Gates in mourning for the people involved in yesterday's tragedies in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania," Brand told the assembled crowd.

Among those in attendance was Terry Clapacs, IU vice president for administration. Clapacs explained the symbolism behind his selection of the wreaths and flowers placed on the Sample Gates. "I chose flowers that are energetic and bright to represent the lives that were lost, and the wreaths are circles which are symbolic of rebirth and life."
