IU's Kelley School of Business to launch new master's degree in information systems

Nov. 20, 2000

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Corporations around the world seek employees with the skills and knowledge required to understand the complex nature of evolving digital businesses.

In response to employers' growing reliance on obtaining and retaining staff who can assume leadership roles in global information age enabling technologies, Indiana University's Kelley School of Business is launching a new master's degree program to prepare students for leadership roles in facilitating e-business solutions.

The Kelley School's Systems and Accounting Graduate Programs office will introduce the master of science in information systems degree beginning in the fall semester of 2001. The year-long program is designed for students with a wide range of academic backgrounds.

Students will receive an integrated, multi-disciplinary learning experience designed to provide and integrate a core of information systems (IS) knowledge, IS and business foundations, and specific technical skills and knowledge leading to a career.

Classroom presentations, combined with case studies and company-sponsored, team-oriented project management, are part of the learning environment for this degree program. Students will use portable laptop computers to facilitate data exchange in the classroom and in their field studies.

A technology-rich studio will provide a unique complement to traditional learning, giving MSIS student teams hands-on opportunities to set up and configure hardware and software infrastructures as well as to develop, test and deploy complex e-business applications and facilitate e-business solutions.

"The MSIS market-driven curriculum provides a real-world perspective coupled with communication, interpersonal, team-building, analytical and critical-thinking skills. These essential career development skills, often overlooked in other programs of this type, are embedded in the curriculum and individual MSIS courses," said John Hill, chairperson of accounting graduate programs in the Kelley School.

The MSIS program will address decision-making issues and technologies associated with topics such as new e-commerce business models; redesign and integration of core business processes; and design and development of Web-based applications, such as CGI programming using Perl, Java servlets, cold fusion, Java server pages, active server pages and application server environments. Other topics it will address are architecture of the enabling telecommunications infrastructure; project management of Internet-based systems; and pervasive computing, such as wireless communication, information applications and collaborative computing.

Students enrolled in the program will pursue one of two specialization tracks. The E-Business Applications and Systems Services track is for those interested in the design and development of e-business software applications and systems services in the areas of business processes and business-to-business or business-to-consumer/client issues.

The E-Business Infrastructure track is for students interested in the design, development and maintenance of the underlying support infrastructure, including platforms and networks which support and deliver applications and systems services such as computer hardware, data networking and telecommunications services.

Students may apply to the program after completing a bachelor's degree in any academic discipline from an accredited college or university, or during their senior year.

The Systems and Accounting Graduate Programs office also offers an MBA in accounting and a master of professional accountancy degree. For more information, contact SAGP at 812-855-7200, e-mail sagp@indiana.edu, or go on the Web to http://sagp.kelley.indiana.edu
